I gotta laugh like a madman,

Tuned-in to the first morning traffic

Changing Gears

Like it knows what we’re all thinking,

Like the birdbrain magic chorus,

Changing gears.

Don’t believe those birds are singing

‘Cause they ain’t.

They’re only changing gears.

I wanna fly like a birdman, no mortal skin

Just feathers for my wigwam,

Like I know it’s all a pretty-sham,

I’m really more a glider. They’re all mad.

My hidden engines gonna bury those fears

Like changing gears, I’m changing gears.

And those birds, they’re all alarm clocks

Rubbing cogs, changing gears

And the sirens, all distractions

Nothing happens. Only here,

Where them big boys travellin’ light-years

Like da lightnin’, changing gears. [up in semitones]

Church bells toll in,

Lines of brides for weddings,

Neat and tidied-up,

Tightly tied

And guaranteed for years…

But time is a-rollin

Now it’s getting late,

Late and allwised-up,

Nicely wired

For changing partners, changing gears.

I gotta breathe like a real man,

Soak in the best, sowin’ seeds now I’m here

Changing gears is all I need.

With the space-age dawning

Came a crawling fear

Now it’s racing

As our minds ride smaller

And the skies can’t wait no more;

They’re changing,

Changing colours, changing gears.

…No the skies can’t wait no longer

Changing colour, they’re forever. Changing gears.
