Slovakia (population
5,379,455)
Most households
have TV, and 2002 saw five terrestrial and cable broadcasters in operation,
namely STV-1 (98% penetration), STV-2 (90% penetration), Markíza (94%),
JOJ and TA-3 (news, cable). Global (now JOJ) covered 68% of territory,
and boasted an audience share of only 1.4%, but is expected to soar
in popularity, providing an alternative to Markíza.
JOJ TV broadcasts old TV Nova material;
TV Nova can still be received terrestrially in western territories.
Czech ČT-1 can be received by 46% of Slovakians
and ČT-2, by 32%,
although both stations combined only enjoy 4% of market share. Prima
TV (also Czech) has a 3.27% market share, and TV-3 0.78%. Questions
have been raised here over international copyright conventions.
In the South, some Hungarian
stations are available on air. News and sport dominate national viewing
tables, and Slovakia’s TV industry
is corrupt and lacking in innovation.
TV Markíza is owned 34% by
CME. JOJ TV is owned by Česká Produkční invest, which is in turn owned by MEF
Holding. TA-3 is owned majoritarily by UK company Millenium Electronics.
Subtitling in Slovakian is
rare, and voice over is virtually non-existent. TV Markíza (private)
is the nation’s principal channel.
