Spain (population 41,116,800)

Two national public broadcasters exist, namely Televisión Española and RTVE. There are also 10 regional public channels. These are: Catalunya – TV-3, Canal 33; Basque Country – ETB-2, RTB-1; Galicia – TVG; Madrid – Telemadrid; Andalucía – Canal Sur, Canal 2 AND; Valencia – Canal 9, Noticies 9/PUNT 2; Aragón – TVA.

There are also many private companies in Spain, such as Antena 3 TV (owned 48% by Telefónica, RTL/Pearson 22%, Bertelsmann 37%, GBL 30%); Telecinco (Berlusconi 40%, Kirch 25%, Correo 10%, Planeta 10%); Canal Plus Sogecable (Pay TV, owned Canal Plus Francia 20%, Prisa 20%, Group March 13%, Bilbao Vizcaya Argentinaria Bank 5%, Caja Madrid 4%; Canal Satélite Digital (Sogecable Group Prisa 82%, Warner Bros 10%, Antena 3 TV 5%, Proarda 5%); Via Digital (Telefónica 16%, SMM 16%, Televisa 10%, Direct TV 7%, plus Mediapark, Recoletos, TVG, Canal 9, Telemadrid); Quiero TV (Retrevisión 48%, Mediapark 15%, Sofiscable 15%, Cajas de Ahorros 10%, Carlton Com 8%, Ivercatalunya cable 4%); Net TV (Prensa Española 25%, Pantalla Digital 25%, Viaplus/Altadis 18%, Europroducciones 9%, TF-1 7%, SIC 7%, Intereconomía 7%); Veo TV (Unidesa 26%, Recoletos 25%, Iberdrola 20%, J. Abelló 15%).

Legally, two cable operators are allowed in each Autonomous Community, one for Telefónica and a second for either Retevisión or Cable Europe (cable is still in its infancy in Spain). Advertising plays a major role in supporting Spanish TV, and variety, talk shows etc. therefore predominate along with films, soaps and football. Cultural programming is poor, and is only shown prime-time on La 2 and Canal 33, both public.

It is worth noting that Warner Bros (see Canal Satélite Digital, Sogecable, Prisa-owned) has agreements with Walt Disney/Buenavista, Paramount, Colombia Tristar and Polygram. Telefónica is also moving towards production, with a 25% stake in Mediapark and Endemol. Via Digital and Antena 3-TV have agreements with Filmax, Twentieth Century Fox and Movierecord Cine.
