Ukraine
In late 2004 it
was impossible to turn on the TV without hearing something about the
Ukranian elections, street vigils and demonstrations within a couple
of hours. In terms of TV, the country is characterised by its own
peculiar brand of corruption, privileged through subsidisation and
the freezing out of Russian ownership. Nonetheless, 20% of Russian-speaking
Ukranians in the industrialised eastern territory are of Russian origin.
It is apparent that TV in Central and Eastern Europe has followed the Italian model, inasmuchas state or governmental
control has all but eradicated democratid, pluralistic principles,
offering no coherent, cohesive substitute to take their place.
