United Kingdom (population
59,000,000)
Cable and satellite
are on the up; ITV has merged across the board and shooting platforms
will soon be standardised. Commercialisation is rife in the UK, with a proliferation
of repeats reflecting the inability of terrestrial TV to meet cable
and satellite competition. Channel 4 and possibly Channel 5, plus
BBC 2 are the most likely early targets for SCTV in the UK, but we must
retain foreign rights.
Cable and satellite in the
UK is controlled
(wholesale) offshore. In a nutshell, it’s Rupert Murdoch vs. Telewest
(US-controlled) vs. NTL (US-managed, with French and other foreign
investors).
The ITV and BBC 1 tend not
to privilege US product as much
as the other three, but are less easily accessible to eSCape tv
outside of night programming. Welsh-language TV is well-aligned
with eSCape tv’s Internet presence.
